"Custer Had It Coming!"

No matter which side of that statement you make your last stand on,
"CUSTER" is the only name needed to bring up an image of George A. Custer.

George Armstrong Custer died as a brave but pretentious leader, with as many critics as he had loyal devoted followers.

More than a century has passed,
but even now
Just mention the name
Custer

and Fire Horses begin snorting and War Horses begin charging.

What was the real Custer like though,
in his own home, with his hair down and all need for pretensions dropped?

Boots and Saddles is the story of Custer as told by his wife, Elizabeth B. Custer.

Libbie was by far Custer's biggest fan. She loved him to the exclusion of all else when he was yet alive.  She never publicly criticized anything he did.  After his death she worked tirelessly for the rest of her life to immortalize him, and by outliving him for over fifty years, she was able to use her strong personality to prevent any other criticism during her lifetime.

She also used her husband's fame to advance her own lucrative career as a writer and lecturer on the West. During a time in history when proper ladies were not supposed to support themselves, Libbie managed to write three books - one of them a bestseller - and traveled the lecture circuit throughout the US and Europe.

More than a history of George Custer, Boots and Saddles is also an open window into Army life.

Think for a moment of carrying your entire household goods in a single freight wagon, with room left on top for the belongings of your servant.  What could possibly be there? a few changes of clothes, a mere handful of jewelry, your bedding gear, a small medicine chest, a barrel of flour, a barrel of sugar, a case of books?

Now think of all the things you'll be leaving behind by stepping back through time into her shoes.
